How to Get Through Exam Week Without Feeling Overwhelmed
Exam week can be demanding when two papers are close together or you feel less prepared for one subject than another. Give yourself a short plan for each day. Include the paper you are writing, what you still need to revise and the practical details that will help you arrive ready to begin.
Check the timetable and prepare the night before
Confirm the subject, paper number, venue and starting time using the timetable your school or institution gave you. Pack the stationery and equipment permitted for the paper, along with any required identification or admission documents. Check how you will get there and allow time for delays. This leaves you with fewer decisions to make in the morning.
Give the next study session a narrow focus
Look at which topics are most likely to cause you trouble based on your practice. Spend time on a manageable task, such as reviewing common errors in a calculation or planning two essay answers. If a paper is the next morning, choose a time to finish revising so you have time to eat, prepare your bag and get some rest.
Use the instructions to plan your writing time
At the start of the paper, check which questions you must answer and where you have a choice. Use the mark allocations to guide how long you spend on each section. If a question takes longer than expected, note where you stopped and return to it if time allows. Keep a few minutes to check question numbers, working and unfinished answers.
Reset after each paper
It is natural to compare answers with friends. If those conversations leave you distracted, decide when to end them and turn your attention to the next subject. Have something to eat, get some water and take a short break. Then look at the first task on your plan for the next paper.
Speak up if you are struggling to cope
If the pressure makes it difficult to prepare or get through the day, tell someone you trust. A parent, teacher or student support adviser can help you decide what to prioritise and point you to further support if you need it.
Bright Nerds Solutions encourages learners to check tomorrow’s exam details before they start tonight’s revision. Knowing when to leave, what to pack and which topic to review gives the evening a clear structure.
