How to Manage Your Money as a University Student

Student expenses rarely arrive evenly throughout the month. You might pay for transport on Monday, buy groceries on Wednesday and discover on Friday that you need printing money for an assignment. A simple budget helps you see what your money must cover and how much you can spend before the next payment arrives.

Start with the money you have available

Write down the amount you have now and the date you expect your next payment. If you receive family support, wages or a bursary allowance, record what each source covers. Keep expected payments separate from money already available. If a payment is delayed, ask the relevant office or provider when you can expect an update.

Set aside the costs you need to cover first

List accommodation, food, transport, data and learning materials. Include less frequent costs such as laundry, a trip home or equipment required for practical work. If someone else pays for some of these items, check what has already been covered. That gives you a clearer picture of what still needs to come out of your budget.

Work out a weekly amount

Suppose you have R1 200 left after setting aside fixed costs and the money needs to last four weeks. That gives you R300 a week before any extra expenses you still need to cover. If you know that one week will cost more because of a trip home, set the fare aside first and divide what remains across the four weeks.

Find where small expenses add up

Track what you spend for one week. You may notice that buying lunch on campus costs more than you expected, or that several small data purchases cost more together than you had planned. Pick one expense you can change and check what difference it makes the following week.

Ask about support when essentials become difficult to cover

If you are short of money for food, transport or accommodation, contact the financial aid or student support office. Explain what you need, when you need it and whether an expected payment has been delayed. Ask what assistance is available and what documents you need to provide.

Bright Nerds Solutions encourages students to check their budget on the same day each week. Look at what you have left, what is due next and which expense you can adjust if the numbers have changed.
