How to Read a Textbook and Remember What You Read

Have you ever reached the bottom of a textbook page and realised you could barely explain what you had just read? It is easy to keep moving through the sentences while your attention drifts. You can make textbook reading more useful by giving yourself a question to answer and stopping periodically to check what you have understood.

Turn a heading into a question

Before reading a section, look at its heading, diagrams and any bold words. If the heading says “Factors Affecting Climate”, write down a question such as “Why can two places at the same latitude have different climates?” As you read, look for ideas that help you answer it. Give yourself a second question if the section covers more than one topic.

Work through one idea at a time

Pause when the textbook introduces a new term or example. Try to connect it to something you already know. If a definition still feels unclear, read the example that follows and identify where the term appears in practice. Put a small mark next to any point that needs further explanation so you can return to it or ask your teacher.

Read diagrams alongside the explanation

Look at the labels, arrows, units or scales in a diagram before trying to interpret it. If the text describes water moving through a plant, trace its route on the drawing while you read. Then turn away from the page and sketch a simple version from memory. Check whether your drawing shows the direction and stages correctly.

Write notes you can use later

Close the textbook and write two or three sentences that answer your original question. Open the book again to check your explanation and add any detail you missed. Keep the page number beside your notes so you can find the source quickly when you revise or ask for help.

Check your understanding the next day

Answer yesterday’s question before opening your notes. Try to include an example or explain how one idea connects to another. If you remember the definition but struggle with the example, spend your next session practising how to apply it.

Bright Nerds Solutions encourages learners to try this method with one textbook section. Give yourself a question, find the answer and see how much you can explain the following day.
