How to Manage Phone Distractions While Studying for Matric
For many learners, a phone is where they download notes, watch lessons and receive updates from their class group. It is also easy to open a message while looking for a past paper and lose track of the task. Decide before each session what you need your phone for and when you will check everything else.
Download your study materials before you start
Open the notes, question paper or video you need and save it for offline use if you can. If data is limited, download larger files when you have access to Wi-Fi. Give files clear names so you can find the right subject and paper quickly. Keep a notebook nearby if you find it easier to work out answers on paper.
Set up your phone for the task
Silence notifications from apps you can check later. If you need to stay reachable, allow important calls and mute the rest. When using your phone for a lesson, keep the video or document open and write down any unrelated thing you want to look up afterwards. When working from a textbook, put the phone somewhere you would have to get up to reach it.
Decide when you will take a break
Try finishing a small task before checking messages. You could answer three questions, mark them and then take five minutes to reply. Set an alarm if you tend to lose track of time. Write down the task you will return to so you can pick up where you left off.
Notice what makes you reach for your phone
Some interruptions come from notifications. Others happen when a question feels difficult or you are unsure what to do next. When you notice yourself reaching for the phone, try writing one sentence about what is holding you up. You might need to look up a definition, revisit a worked example or ask your teacher about a particular step.
Try one change for a week
Start with the interruption that happens most often. If class group messages keep breaking your concentration, mute the group during your study session and check it afterwards. At the end of the week, look at whether you completed more of the work you planned.
Bright Nerds Solutions encourages learners to prepare their phones for study the same way they prepare their books. Decide which materials you need, put them within reach and give each session a clear task.
