How to Use AI Responsibly for Schoolwork and Assignments

AI can give you another way to approach a difficult topic when your notes or textbook explanation feel unclear. It can suggest examples, create practice questions or help you think through a draft. The quality of the answer varies, and your school or university may have specific instructions about using AI for assessed work. Check those instructions before using it on an assignment.

Ask for help with the part you find difficult

Tell the tool what you already understand and where you get stuck. If you are studying ratios, for example, ask it to explain why both sides of a ratio must be scaled by the same amount. You can also ask for a small hint, complete the next step yourself and then check your working against a textbook example.

Use it to create practice material

Give the tool a topic and ask for five questions that increase in difficulty, with answers at the end. Work through them on your own first. If a question seems unclear or an answer looks wrong, compare it with class notes or ask your teacher. For matric exam preparation, use past papers alongside any practice material you generate so you become familiar with the actual question style.

Verify facts, calculations and references

Check important claims against a reliable source. If an answer includes a quotation, open the original text and confirm the wording and context. If it gives you a calculation, redo the steps and check the units. If it suggests a source for an assignment, find and read the source yourself before deciding whether it belongs in your work.

Keep personal information out of prompts

Use an invented example or remove identifying details when asking a question about a document. Leave out ID numbers, home addresses and private information about classmates. If you need help with a paragraph, sharing the relevant passage is usually enough to get feedback.

Follow the rules for each assessment

Check whether your teacher or lecturer allows AI for brainstorming, editing or any other part of the task. If the instructions require you to declare how you used it, keep a note of what you asked and what you used. Before submitting, make sure you can explain the ideas and decisions in your work.

Bright Nerds Solutions encourages learners to test this approach with a revision question. Attempt it first, ask for help with one step and then answer a similar question independently.
