How to Adjust to University in Your First Year
The first few weeks at university can feel busy before the coursework even starts. You may be learning your way around campus, getting used to a new timetable and trying to work out where notices are posted. Pick a few practical tasks for your first week so that lectures, tutorials and deadlines become easier to manage.
Find out where important information appears
Log in to your student email and learning platform. Open each module and look for the course outline, assessment dates and contact details. Save the dates in one calendar and check for changes regularly. If a class group gives different information about a deadline, ask the lecturer or check the official module announcement.
Build a week around your actual commitments
Start with lectures, tutorials and practicals. Add travel, work or household responsibilities, then identify times for reading and assignments. If you have a long gap between classes, use part of it to review a lecture or start a reading at the library. Leave enough time for meals and travel between venues.
Review new work while it is still fresh
After a lecture, write down the main idea and one question you still have. Try a tutorial problem or explain the idea to a classmate. For example, if you can follow a calculation when the lecturer does it but struggle to start it alone, bring your attempt to the tutorial and ask about that first step.
Break assignments into separate tasks
When an assignment is released, read the instructions and marking guide. Work out when you will find sources, prepare an outline, write a draft and check your references. Keep track of the material you use as you go. If you are unsure about group work, referencing or the use of digital tools, check the instructions for that assessment.
Get to know people and places you can turn to
Introduce yourself to someone in a tutorial and find out who teaches or coordinates your modules. Locate the library and ask how to access academic advising or student support. If you miss a few classes or feel behind, contact the relevant lecturer and ask which work to prioritise first.
Bright Nerds Solutions encourages first-year students to choose a regular time each week to check deadlines and plan their workload. A short Sunday or Monday review can help you spot a busy week while you still have time to prepare.
